HONOLULU–Three people were killed and two others wounded in a shooting at a Hawaii home Saturday night that stemmed from a dispute between neighbors, police said. The gunman was also shot by a local resident who was arrested on a second-degree murder charge.

Witnesses said a 58-year-old man used a front-end loader to ram cars into the home where a family gathering was taking place and then opened fire on people gathered in the carport, shooting three women inside the home in Wainanae, a community about 30 miles west of downtown Honolulu, Honolulu Police Detective Lt. Deena Thoemmes said.

At some point, a 42-year-old man who lived in the home shot the suspect with a handgun, she said at a news conference. A police spokesman did not immediately respond to a phone message or email seeking details about the reason for the resident's arrest.

The women killed were 34, 36 and 29 years old, Thoemmes said. A 31-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were taken to hospital in critical condition, she said.

The suspect, whose identity is unknown, had four 55-gallon drums of an unknown fuel in the front-end loader, Thoemmes said. Witnesses reported he shot at it, but police have not yet confirmed that, she said.

The shootings are the latest in a series of shootings in the area in recent weeks that have prompted police to take a stand against gun violence, Police Chief Joe Logan said at the news conference. But he said Saturday's shootings were unrelated to the earlier ones. He said it would be difficult for police to prevent such a targeted act stemming from a dispute unless someone intervened sooner.
