After fatal crash with two-year-old: Police provide new details

Two men were involved in an illegal car race under the influence of drugs and caused an accident with an uninvolved vehicle. A mother and her two children were in the vehicle. A two-year-old did not survive the crash.

As the police now explained, the 22 and 24 year old drivers were arrested on Friday evening and remain in custody.

The investigations and collected evaluations of the vehicle data have shown that both vehicles were traveling at a significantly higher speed. This strengthened the suspicion of an illegal street race. According to the Abendblatt, a dashcam was installed in the Tesla. At the time of the accident, the speedometer is said to have shown 175 km/h; the speed limit on Schiffbeker Weg is 50 km/h.

The Mercedes had attempted to overtake the Tesla, colliding with the Ford of the mother and two children. The small car then collided with the Tesla, which only came to a stop after 100 meters, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

In addition, both drivers are said to be a flight risk. The Tesla driver with Indian roots is said to have even tried to flee to his homeland after the accident. The Mercedes driver is also said to have connections abroad.

According to a police spokesman, the two men could be found at their home addresses. Further evidence was secured during subsequent apartment searches. The homicide squad has now taken over the investigation, which is still ongoing.

Following the death of the two-year-old, mourners had left numerous candles, flowers and stuffed animals at the scene of the accident.
