Vladimir Putin News: Human Rights Watch calls for Putin to visit Mongolia

Kremlin chief Putin traveled to Mongolia, the first time since the war began that he has visited a country that recognizes the International Criminal Court. Human rights activists are appealing to the local leadership.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch has called on Mongolia to Vladimir Putin to deny him entry or to arrest him. “Mongolia would be violating its international obligations as a member of the International Criminal Court if it allowed Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit without arresting him,” said Maria Elena Vignoli of the International Criminal Court. Justice at Human Rights Watch, according to a statement.

According to information from Moscow, Putin is travelling to the country on Tuesday at the invitation of Mongolian President Uchnaagiin Khürelsüch to expand cooperation with the neighbour – despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

Kremlin remains calm

Russia's neighbor recognizes the criminal court and should actually arrest the Kremlin chief during his stay in Ulan Bator. Moscow, however, sees this as relaxed and, due to the friendly relations between the two countries, no danger for Putin, as Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained. It is Putin's first trip since the start of his war of aggression against Ukraine to a country that is a member of the court in The Hague.

Mongolia has sought to maintain a balanced relationship with its powerful neighbors China and Russia, as well as with the West. Because Mongolia is also dependent on Russia, it is considered unlikely that the country would jeopardize relations by arresting Putin.
