NFL star Ricky Pearsall released from hospital after surviving shooting

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital on Sunday after being shot in the chest during a robbery in the city's Union Square district on Saturday.

Pearsall's condition was upgraded to “good,” according to media reports, after he was described as “serious but stable” in a team statement on Saturday evening.

“San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital this afternoon where he continues to recover from a gunshot wound to the chest,” the team said in a statement Sunday.

“He and his family, as well as the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, EMS, doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital.”

His mother, Erin Pearsall, said in a social media post on Sunday that her son was “incredibly lucky.”

“First of all I want to thank GOD for protecting my little boy,” she wrote on Facebook. “He is very lucky, GOD protected him. He was shot in the chest, the bullet exited his back. Thank God it missed his vital organs… My son was spared today by the grace of GOD.”

The 17-year-old suspect in the attempted robbery was arrested Saturday as he tried to flee the scene, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said.

The suspected gunman, who targeted Pearsall's Rolex watch, was also hospitalized after the shooting and still faces charges.

Pearsall was taken to San Francisco General Hospital. A video shot in Union Square and posted on social media shows a shirtless Pearsall carefully walking to an ambulance with the help of police. While sitting on a stretcher, he moved his left hand, which was pressing his shirt against the right side of his chest, near his shoulder, and blood was visible.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the 911 call came in at 3:28 p.m. local time and that there were two gunshot victims during police response. The other victim was the suspected robber, who was shot while struggling with Pearsall over the gun.

“A struggle ensued between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect, and both Mr. Pearsall and the suspect were struck by gunfire from the suspect's weapon,” Scott said during a news conference on Saturday.
