KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a drone attack as well as cruise and ballistic missiles on Kiev, the Ukrainian Air Force said early Monday.

In the early hours of Monday morning, several explosions shook the Ukrainian capital and forced the population into air raid shelters.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said rescue workers were called to Kyiv's Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts. One person was reportedly injured by falling debris in Shevchenkivskyi district, Klitschko said.

“There will be an answer to everything. The enemy will feel it,” the head of the presidential office, Andrii Yermak, posted on his Telegram page after the attack.

According to the Russian Air Force, Russia fired several groups of cruise missiles at Kyiv, accompanied by the launch of ballistic missiles and some drones.

Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said that more than ten cruise missiles, about ten ballistic missiles and one drone fired at the Ukrainian capital and its suburbs were destroyed by Ukrainian air defenses.

An explosion also occurred in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, according to Ukrainian media. Oleh Syniehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, confirmed an early morning impact in the Industrialnyi district of Kharkiv and said a residential building and several other buildings caught fire.

The shelling came a day after the Russian military reported intercepting and destroying 158 Ukrainian drones that were attacking several Russian regions in one of the largest Ukrainian attacks in the war that has been raging for about two and a half years.

In addition, the action took place just a few weeks after Ukrainian forces invaded the Russian region of Kursk, which Moscow's armed forces have so far had difficulty repelling and to which the Kremlin has announced a response.
