Two criminals were arrested in two separate incidents after they were shot at as they allegedly attacked police officers while trying to flee, officials familiar with the matter said

In the first incident, 26-year-old Jayanth Kumar was arrested on Saturday on charges of robbery, kidnapping, attempt to murder, house breaking and entering and other charges lodged at various police stations in Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Ramanagara and Mandya districts.

Dobbaspet police inspector B. Raju said they received information that Kumar was planning a robbery near Nilgiri Grove in Kambalu in Bengaluru Rural district. “The police reacted swiftly and reached the scene around 7 pm. They fired warning shots in the air and asked him to surrender. However, Jayant attacked Superintendent of Police Imran Khan, who tried to arrest him, with a knife and tried to escape. In response, I shot his right leg after which we arrested him,” he said, adding that the accused and the injured policeman have been admitted to Dabaspet Public Hospital.

He said: “We searched him in connection with the robbery of a truck driver in the village of Billinakote on July 7.”

In another incident in Kalaburagi, criminal Avtar Singh (36) was arrested near Upalamwa Cross on Saturday after a three-day manhunt, an official said. He is facing 12 counts of robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder. He said during the arrest, Singh tried to attack the officers with a knife. In response, the policemen fired, hitting Singh in the leg. The accused has been admitted to GIMS Hospital in Kalaburagi.
