Investigation continues after St. Boniface shooting, one person injured – Winnipeg Free Press

A man was hospitalized and police are investigating after receiving reports of gunshots in an apartment complex in St. Boniface late Sunday morning.

The nature of the man's injuries had not been confirmed as of Sunday afternoon, and Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said it was too early to release details of the ongoing investigation. She confirmed police were called to the area of 153 Aubert St. because gunshots were heard. Officers from the police tactical team and several police vehicles remained on scene into the afternoon searching the area and collecting evidence.

Neighbors reported to the Free Press They heard three or four gunshots. Neighbor Anthony Robertson, who has lived there for two years, said it was the third shooting in the area since he moved there.

The 65-year-old adopted a German Shepherd after a shooting in March 2023 because he no longer feels safe.

Robertson's family is urging him to move. He said he will likely move to a different neighborhood after the winter.

“This scene has played out too many times,” Robertson said from his porch late Sunday afternoon. “I feel sorry for the residents because this is a beautiful area.”

Robertson said it's a “drug scene” every weekend. He says he sees several cars arrive at once and pass what he thinks are drugs through the window. He often sees people in the field across from his house using substances.

“I'm not happy with it,” Robertson said. “I was shocked. It was crazy.”

Several police cars were parked in front of the apartment block, some of them on the second-floor balcony. Others came through the main entrance with large paper bags in their hands.
