Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw has to go on the injured list because of a bone spur in his toe

PHOENIX – The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day injured list.

Kershaw, who left Friday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second inning, was diagnosed with a bone spur in his left big toe.

“The swelling is so bad, he can hardly move,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts before Saturday's 8-6 win over the Diamondbacks.

Roberts said the Dodgers don't know exactly how long Kershaw will be out, but are confident he will return before the end of the season.

Kershaw allowed three runs in the first inning, and after the Dodgers' early exit, all of their team's relievers had to pitch, with the exception of Evan Phillips, who had pitched the previous two days.

Kershaw, who did not pitch until July 25 after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts. In 17 seasons, all with the Dodgers, the 10-time All-Star is 212-94 with a 2.50 ERA.

Right-hander Joe Kelly was also placed on the injured list by Los Angeles on Saturday because of right shoulder inflammation. Kelly pitched 1⅔ innings on Friday, allowing two earned runs on three hits. The 13-year veteran is 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA in 31 games this year.

In related moves, the Dodgers called up right-hander Ben Casparius from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Kershaw and selected the contract of RHP Brent Honeywell for his second assignment with the club this season. Honeywell was designated for assignment on Aug. 18.

Both pitchers came in as relief pitchers on Saturday, with Honeywell allowing one run in two innings and Casparius pitching a scoreless inning.

LHP Justin Wrobleski is on the team and will be activated for Sunday's game against Arizona with the roster expansion.
