Boston police arrest suspect accused of stabbing man and breaking into house

Boston police have arrested a suspect who allegedly stabbed a man in Dorchester on Saturday morning and then broke into a resident's basement to flee from police.

Kelvin Ortiz, 30, of Roxbury was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, burglary and trespassing, Boston police said in a news release.

Officers responded to the area of Columbia Road and Stoughton Street in Dorchester for a report of a man being stabbed around 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 31, police said. At the scene, they found a man with a stab wound.

Paramedics took the man to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Before leaving the scene, the man was able to locate a fleeing suspect near the intersection of Columbia Road and Dudley Street.

Officers began pursuing the suspect – later identified as Ortiz – and told nearby officers that he was now riding a bicycle, police said. They searched the area and soon found Ortiz on Gene Street just as he was dismounting from his bicycle.

Ortiz jumped a fence but was soon stopped on Humphreys Street, where he was told he had broken into a resident's basement, police said. Ortiz attempted to flee the basement but was arrested by officers on Wendover Street.

Ortiz is scheduled to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
