Kane and record player Müller make Freiburg's victory perfect

FC Bayern beat SC Freiburg 2-0 on Sunday, winning its first Bundesliga home game of the season. Harry Kane put Munich ahead with a penalty just before half-time, before Thomas Müller scored the final goal in the second half to mark his anniversary. The Bavarian played his 710th competitive game for Bayern after around an hour, surpassing Sepp Maier's record of 709.

Bayern played with Manuel Neuer in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Aleksandar Pavlović, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Mathys Tel and Serge Gnabry played in midfield, with Kane leading the attack. Müller, Kingsley Coman, João Palhinha, Konrad Laimer and Leon Goretzka came on in the second half for Olise, Tel, Pavlović, Musiala and Upamecano.

Bayern played up front in the first half, although there were few clear-cut chances. Kane hit the side netting from a tight angle before Lukas Kübler narrowly beat Musiala to Gnabry's pass. Munich set up camp in Freiburg's half and Olise's effort was saved before Tel shot wide.

Just before half-time, Bayern were awarded a penalty for handball and Kane scored his 37th Bundesliga goal after winning the 2023/24 Top scorer before kick-off. A shot from Gnabry was blocked, but Kane's goal from the penalty spot was all that separated the two teams at half-time.

Freiburg gained ground as the game entered a very scrappy phase. Neuer reacted well to save a rebound from Patrick Osterhage after an hour. Ten minutes later, Coman's shot was blocked and the follow-up went just wide, but Munich made it 2-0 with a quarter of an hour to go when Gnabry's chip found Müller, who fired the ball home with a beautiful first touch.

Neuer parried a shot from Roland Sallai before Freiburg were awarded a penalty for handball in injury time, but Lucas Höler shot over and Bayern secured a deserved victory.

With their second win, Bayern are second in the new Bundesliga table behind Heidenheim on goal difference. Several players will now head off to their national teams to spend the international break before the Reds return to action on September 14 when they face Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.
