Veteran journalist Umesh Upadhyay dies in bizarre accident | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: The 66-year-old experienced journalist died in a tragic accident Umesh Upadhyay reportedly died on Sunday after falling from the fourth floor of an under-construction building in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj.
Accordingly policeUpadhyay was inspecting renovation work at his house in Block C-8 of Vasant Kunj when he accidentally fell and landed on the second floor at around 10.30 am.
He suffered severe head injuries and numerous other injuries. He was taken to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre where he succumbed to his injuries.
A media A veteran with over four decades of experience in the industry, Upadhyay was the News President at Network 18. He was also the Media Head at Reliance Industries Limited. Upadhyay has worked at several other news organizations including Zee News, Sab TV, Janmat TV, Doordarshan and Press Trust of India.
His younger brother, Satish Upadhyay, is a senior BJP functionary and currently the vice-chairman of the NDMC. He was previously the President of the state of Delhi.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. “I am deeply saddened by the death of the senior journalist and writer Umesh Upadhyay ji, who made valuable contributions in the field of digital media and television. His death is an irreparable loss to the world of journalism. I offer my condolences to his family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!” Modi wrote.
Police received information about the incident at 2.48 pm and launched an investigation. A post-mortem and an inquiry under Section 194 of the BNS are underway, an official said. Police said they are investigating to ascertain the circumstances of the fall and whether negligence or foul play was involved. Another police officer said Upadhyay's family is currently away from the house due to renovation work.
Born in Mathura in 1958, Upadhyay began his career in journalism in the early 1980s. He had recently written a book titled “Western Media Narratives about India: From Gandhi to Modi”.
Upadhyay was an alumnus of JNU and Delhi University. He did his Masters and M Phil from the School of International Studies, JNU and was a member of the Academic Council of Delhi University.
His last rites will be performed at Nigambodh Ghat on Monday.
