Mangaluru police rescue kidnapped girl within two hours

MANGALURU: In a swift operation, Kankanady police rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who had been kidnapped and returned her to her parents within two hours of receiving the complaint.

The incident occurred on August 31, when the child, the daughter of garden workers from the Alape-Padil Forestry Department, disappeared at around 4:30 p.m.

The parents, who were searching for the child, finally reported it to the Kankanady police at 7.30 p.m.

The police immediately swung into action and alerted the officials. While checking the CCTV footage from Mangaluru Junction railway station, they noticed an elderly man walking away with the child.

The Kankanady police immediately informed the Kasaragod Railway Police about a train heading towards Kerala. The suspect along with the child was arrested by the Railway Police at 9.30 pm and the Kankanady Police team led by PSI Shivakumar brought the child back to his parents the same evening.

Police said that the accused, Aneesh Kumar (49), of Thathappilly, Paravur in Ernakulam district of Kerala, allegedly had a dispute at home and was travelling back to Mumbai to visit his mother. During investigation, it emerged that he saw the child playing on the roadside near the Botanical Garden and as he himself has three sons, he wanted to raise a girl child. He then kidnapped the child.

After his arrest, Aneesh Kumar was remanded in custody.
