Two people, including a woman, were killed and nine others injured when suspected militants carried out a gun and bomb attack in Manipur's Imphal West district on Sunday, police said.

According to police, the militants fired indiscriminately from the hills into the lower valley areas of Koutruk and the neighboring Kadangband. Two people were killed and nine others injured. Several houses were damaged by the heavy shelling by the militants, they said.

Of the nine injured, five suffered gunshot wounds while the others suffered shrapnel injuries from bomb explosions, hospital officials said.

The sudden attack on the unsuspecting village sparked widespread panic and forced many residents, including women, children and the elderly, to flee to safer areas, police added.

The body of the deceased woman, identified as 31-year-old Ngangbam Surbala Devi, has been sent to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for post-mortem. The identity of the other victim is yet to be ascertained, police said.

To stabilize the situation, state and central security forces were deployed to the area.

The state government has strongly condemned the attack on the unarmed villagers of Koutruk.

“The state government has come to know about the unfortunate incident of an attack on unarmed villagers in Koutruk using drones, bombs and sophisticated weapons reportedly used by Kuki militants, resulting in the death of two people, including a woman. The state government views such an act of terror against unarmed villagers very seriously and is making all possible efforts to bring normalcy and peace in the state,” the home ministry said in a statement.

It added that this act of devastation against unarmed villagers was seen as an attempt to thwart the efforts of the state government to establish peace in the state.

“The state government has already taken immediate action to bring the situation under control and punish those involved in the attack on Koutruk village in Imphal West,” the statement added.

In the meantime, the DGP has instructed all SPs to remain on high alert in all peripheral areas.
