BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari calls for President’s rule in the state

Calcutta (West Bengal) [India]September 1 (ANI): Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari slammed the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal over numerous sexual harassment cases in the state and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and imposition of President's rule in the state.

Attacking the TMC over the law and order situation, Adhikari alleged that the state was in the hands of “thugs and rapists”. “Since yesterday, there have been seven incidents… They are in direct contact with the TMC… Bengal is in the hands of goons and rapists… Mamata Banerjee is the root and the architect of this. Resign, Mamata. She should resign. She is the main disease and virus in such incidents,” Adhikari told ANI.

“Mamata Banerjee is the real reason behind this. She should resign. Mamata Banerjee's resignation and President's rule are the reality in Bengal… We BJP MPs are ready to fight this situation. We will expose Mamata Banerjee,” he added.

Earlier, Union Minister and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar had attacked Chief Minister Mamata over the alleged harassment of a nurse in Birbhum and blamed her for the failure of the administration and the police system.

Majumdar added that she had no “moral right” to remain in office and it would be beneficial for the state if she resigned.

“The government has completely failed and the police system has completely collapsed. If anyone is responsible for all this, it is Mamata Banerjee. So, she has no moral right to remain in her post. It would be good for Bengal if Mamata Banerjee leaves her post,” Majumdar told ANI.

A nurse at a government hospital in Birbhum district of West Bengal was reportedly harassed and verbally abused by a male patient.

On Sunday, another case came to light involving the alleged abuse of a minor girl at Howrah Government Hospital.

Howrah Government Hospital superintendent Narayan Chattopadhyay said an FIR was filed at Howrah police station and the accused was subsequently arrested.

BJP state secretary Umesh Rai said the incident took place on Saturday evening when the victim, who was already in the hospital, was undergoing a CT scan. The official also said that they would ensure the safety of the victim and her family members.

These cases come against the backdrop of outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The junior doctor was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

In several states, doctors have held protests demanding justice for the victims and stricter safety laws for medical personnel.

The incident sparked a heated debate within the BJP, which demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Following an order by the Calcutta High Court, the case was handed over by the local police to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the incident. (ANI)
