Death of Ebrahim Raisi: Late Iranian president's helicopter crashed due to bad weather, final report reveals

The helicopter crash that killed late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was mainly caused by weather conditions, including thick fog, Iranian state television reported on Sunday, citing the final investigation report into the incident.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a hardliner who was seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died in May when his helicopter crashed in a mountainous region near the border with Azerbaijan.

“The main cause of the helicopter crash was the difficult weather conditions in the region,” concluded the final report of Iranian state television.

A thick fog caused the helicopter carrying Raisi and his companions to crash into the mountain, according to the report of a high-level commission commissioned by the Iranian military to investigate the incident.

A preliminary report by the Iranian military in May said the investigation had found no evidence of a crime or attack.
