Several dead in new Israeli attack on school housing displaced Gazans

GAZA CITY, Palestine

Several Palestinians were killed in a new Israeli air strike on a school housing displaced people in Gaza City on Sunday, a medical source said.

The attack targeted the Safad School in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, the source said, adding that several people were also injured in the attack.

Israel is systematically attacking civilian facilities, including schools, hospitals and places of worship, as part of its ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Under the rules of war, attacks on such civilian facilities can constitute a war crime.

Last month, at least 100 people were killed and dozens injured in an Israeli attack on the Al-Taba'een school in Gaza City, where more than 6,000 displaced people have sought refuge.

According to local health authorities, Israel's ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip has left more than 40,700 Palestinians dead, mostly women and children, and more than 94,100 injured.

The ongoing blockade of the enclave has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine and left large parts of the region in ruins.

Israel is facing genocide charges before the International Court of Justice, which has ordered a halt to military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians had sought refuge before the territory was captured on May 6.
