Live updates: News on the election of Trump and Harris

President Joe Biden will resume his campaign on Monday, joining Vice President Kamala Harris at a Labor Day event in Pittsburgh after being largely out of sight for the past few weeks.

Biden has spent six weeks in California and Delaware making a fresh start after the turbulent end to his future in presidential politics.

The president has retreated from public life during the holidays on both coasts and is considering how to spend the remaining months of his term after abandoning his bid for a second term in the White House. Biden is expected to return to the campaign trail on Monday to support Harris before returning to Washington.

What’s next: Now free from the pressures and time constraints that come with being campaign manager, Biden has spent the past few weeks working to shape his legacy – with a particular focus on foreign policy. His administration's negotiations with Russia, which led to the largest prisoner exchange in decades earlier this month, were a critical success.

While in California and Delaware, the president made a series of phone calls with foreign leaders. The United States continues to push for an agreement that would include a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas, while also trying to prevent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah from escalating into a larger war that could also draw the United States and Iran into the conflict.

Biden has also spoken to at least five world leaders since his speech at the Democratic National Convention last week. Last Wednesday, he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the ongoing threats from Iran and the need for a ceasefire agreement.
