It has been revealed that a teacher in Northern Ireland was accused of sexually abusing a student.

Judith Evans, who was suspended from teaching at Belfast Boys' Model School, is to stand trial for sexual offences she allegedly committed against a male student, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

Evans, 33, appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Wednesday to deny 11 charges against her relating to a range of sexual offences, including engaging in sexual activity with a minor, possessing an indecent photograph of a student, engaging in sexual communication with a minor, perverting the course of justice and more.

She had tried to prevent her identification as a defendant in the proceedings. Her lawyers justified this with concerns about her mental health, the risk of the student being identified, the risk of impeding the administration of justice and the fact that Evans had filed a criminal complaint herself.

However, the judge refrained from issuing an order to conceal her identity, citing the “importance of an open justice system,” the newspaper reported.

The court heard that Evans was arraigned on Wednesday on charges spanning the period from March 1 to May 17 this year.

It is alleged that during this four-month period, Evans communicated with a student “for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification.”

She was charged with two counts of contact with a child following sexual initiation, two counts of inducing or inciting a child to engage in sexual acts and two counts of intentional sexual contact with a child, including penetration.

She was also charged with causing a child to view an image of a person engaging in sexual activity “for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification” and two counts of being in possession of an indecent image of the student.

Evans also faced a charge of perverting the course of justice between June 13 and June 27, which involved allegedly making false accusations of sexual assault against the boy.

She pleaded not guilty to all charges and Judge Patricia Smyth scheduled her trial for November 4. Evans was also released on bail.

Evans, who has been suspended from teaching at Belfast Boys' Model School (pictured), had sought to prevent her identification as a defendant in the case. Her lawyers cited mental health concerns, the risk of the student being identified, the risk of prejudicial to the administration of justice and the fact that she had also made a criminal complaint.

Evans' lawyer Adrian Harvey, who accompanied her to the dock on Wednesday, had previously told the court that his client had claimed to have been a victim in the encounters with the student, the newspaper reported.

Mr Harvey argued that Evans “is also a plaintiff in these proceedings”.

Her lawyer, Laura Ivers KC, told the judge on Wednesday that the defense was requesting forensic and psychiatric reports before the trial.
