Brooke Shields' daughter knew nothing about her mother's sexual harassment until she saw the documentary “Pretty Baby”

Brooke Shields' younger daughter Grier recalled first learning about her mother's sexual assault when she saw the actress' 2023 documentary “Pretty Baby.”

The two-part series took a comprehensive look at Shields' career, detailing the intense media scrutiny and sexual objectification she faced as the star of the controversial films “Pretty Baby” and “The Blue Lagoon.”

In “Pretty Baby,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in February 2023, Shields, 59, revealed for the first time that she was raped by an unnamed industry professional in her twenties.

Grier recently gave an interview to People magazine along with her mother and sister Rowan (21), in which she recalled her shock at the revelation.

“I was learning things at the same time as the world was learning and just absorbing it in a deeper and more personal way,” Grier said. “I couldn't even get through it.”

Shields, who has two daughters with her husband Chris Hency, said Rowan knew about the assault but Grier did not.

“I didn't prepare her for this,” the model admitted. “It was a misunderstanding. I had explained to her that it was about addressing the sexualization of women in my industry, but I naively thought that she would say, 'Wow, you've been through a lot, but look at where we are today,' because we have such solid, healthy, pretty normal lives and I'm not completely broken.”

The two-time Golden Globe nominee said she regretted not discussing her experience with Grier beforehand when she saw her daughter's reaction.

“I told her, 'But there's a happy ending,' and she said, 'I'll never get over the fact that something bad happened to you,'” Shields recalled.

“In the end, she missed the happy part,” the actress continued. “She felt helpless, and just like us mothers, we make mistakes and sometimes make assumptions.”

“Watching the documentary or seeing your parents as public figures that other people have opinions about is just a strange situation,” Shields admitted.

“Part of being a mother is learning from your children,” she said. “I've learned a lot by listening to them.”

Pretty Baby was released on Hulu in April 2023. In an interview with People magazine in March 2023, Shields spoke about sexual harassment and explained why she was ready to share her story after more than three decades.

“It took me so long to process this … I was never ready before. I had to process it in my own way and on my own terms,” ​​Shields said.

“Everyone processes their trauma on a different timeline… it just felt like the right time.”
