Accident in Murifeld: Cyclist and food lying on the road

A crash with consequences

Dear Lukas

You have no idea who I am – but I haven't been able to get you out of my head for weeks. I was riding my e-bike through the neighborhood when I saw you standing in the middle of an intersection, leaning on your bike handlebars with a helpless expression on your face. A woman was sitting on the ground right next to you, crying. Her bike had tipped over, and groceries and shopping bags were scattered all over the street.

“I just don’t understand,” the woman sobbed.

“Me neither,” you said.

She sniffed. “Why are you just driving into me?”

As she awkwardly stood up, your answer came timidly: “Honey, you looked to the left. That's why I thought you were turning here.”

Now she shouted: “No, Lukas, I’m just looking around a bit!”

When you finally got off your bike and walked to the sidewalk, I decided to give your mishap a wide berth. Firstly, because luckily your girlfriend was unhurt and was also being looked after by you – how should I put it? Secondly, because I don't like getting involved in relationship crises.

But I can't get this scene out of my head. At first I felt for you, the poor man who is being shouted at even though he hasn't actually done anything wrong. It was all just a misunderstanding – and yet now a furious woman is making your life hell.

Then I realized that the said fury is actually more pitiful than you. Your girlfriend is riding calmly through the streets, looks around a bit, and then – this idiot hits her so hard in the side that she falls off her bike. To be honest, Lukas: I'm a balanced person, but I would probably have shouted at you too.

When I imagine how your scene could develop further, I quickly regret having continued.

“Why are you staring around so aimlessly? Concentrate on the road!” you shout back and angrily put the bike on the sidewalk.

Then she says, as she collects the apples scattered on the street: “Don’t keep interpreting all this nonsense into me!”

You, as you press the squashed milk bag back into shape: “Otherwise you always say that I don’t think about things enough.”

She: “Just apologize!”

You: “You could have just said that you would continue driving straight.”

She throws an apple just past your ear. You look at her in horror, then you quickly tear open the milk carton and pour its contents over your head. Meanwhile, the cars are backed up around you in the rush hour traffic until the first driver loses his nerve and joins in your argument. The next day, a report appears on the newspaper's website about a street fight over food in the Murifeld district.
