Berlin. State elections in Thuringia: Who is ahead in the polls? What were the forecasts, projections and results? The overview.

Things are getting exciting in Thuringia: This Sunday, the citizens of the state will elect a new state parliament. The right-wing extremist AfD could become the strongest force for the first time – at least that is what the polls suggest. Result – and before that the forecast and projections – failed, you can read here on election night.

Current poll for the 2024 state election in Thuringia

According to the last survey before the State electionconducted by the opinion research institute Forsa, the AfD is likely to secure a clear victory. In the survey, it received 30 percent – more than six percentage points more than in the last election in 2019.

In second place in the Opinion poll the CDU (22 percent), followed by the BSW (17 percent) and the Left (14 percent), which currently provides the Prime Minister. The SPD (7 percent) is way behind. The Greens and the FDP would miss out on a place in the state parliament. The results of the survey are shown in the table:

Election in Thuringia: Which parties together have a majority?

The formation of the government after the state elections in Thuringia could prove complicated. Although there are several alliances that together would have a majority, in many cases cooperation has already been ruled out.

None of the other parties will form a coalition with the AfD, which is partly right-wing extremist. A purely mathematically possible alliance between the CDU and the AfD seems to be ruled out. A merger between the AfD and BSW would also be possible – but Sahra Wagenknecht had already described such a move as “unacceptable”.

Theoretically, an alliance between the CDU, BSW and SPD would also be possible – the commonalities of the Countries But they would be incredibly small. That leaves the possibility of a minority government. What that might look like, however, is completely offensive.
