Investigation into MK Party fatal accident in KZN

In a taxi there were 17 women from the political party “uMkhonto we Sizwe”.

It was a trip from Estcourt to Nkandla for an event at the home of former President Jacob Zuma.

It is believed that the vehicle overturned and caught fire near Kranskop on Saturday.

KZN Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says a preliminary investigation has been carried out.

“In Ntunjambili the driver's brakes failed. He lost control, the taxi overturned and caught fire.

“Ten passengers suffered minor injuries, while five women were pronounced dead at the scene.”

Sibiya says the MEC has tasked the Road Traffic Management Corporation, the Road Traffic Inspectorate and SAPS with the investigation.

“The focus is on determining whether negligence occurred or on identifying the actual cause of the incident.”
