Boss of gambling ring worth Rs 2,273 crore caught in UAE brought back to Gujarat – The Week

Ahmedabad, Sept 1 (PTI) – In a coordinated operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Gujarat Police and Interpol NCB-Abu Dhabi on Sunday arrested the alleged mastermind of a gambling ring worth over Rs 2,273 crore, who was arrested in the United Arab Emirates, an official said.
A Red Notice has been issued against accused Dipakkumar Dhirajlal Thakkar, who is wanted by the Gujarat police for criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, disappearance of evidence and violations of the Information Technology Act and the Prevention of Gambling Act, the CBI said in a statement.
Thakkar is accused of running an international gambling ring in a criminal case filed on March 25, 2023 at the Madhavpura police station in Ahmedabad.
According to the CBI, he is said to be the boss of an international illegal gambling ring that operates through special software applications and uses hawala channels to distribute proceeds of crime worth over Rs 2,273 crore.
The investigating agency issued a Red Notice from the General Secretariat of Interpol against Thakkar on December 15, 2023, on the request of the Gujarat Police, it said.
A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement authorities worldwide to locate and temporarily detain a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal proceedings.
“A security mission of the Gujarat Police travelled to the United Arab Emirates and returned on September 1 with a Red Notice relating to India,” the statement said.
As the National Central Bureau for Interpol in India, the CBI coordinates with all law enforcement agencies in India to provide assistance through Interpol channels, it said.
