Eleven people, including a child, died in horrific head accident in KZN

A 12-year-old child, the only survivor from one of the vehicles, was found in critical condition and placed on a manual ventilator at the scene.

Eleven people were killed in a head-on collision in KwaZulu-Natal, including a twelve-year-old child.

The accident apparently occurred on Saturday afternoon on the R622 between Greytown and Mooi River.

Roland Roberton, spokesman for Midlands EMS, said emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and were met with a grim sight.

Terrible crash

Roberton said a child was the only survivor from one of the vehicles after both his mother and father were killed in the crash.

“Upon arrival, the emergency services were faced with a terrible sight. Eleven people showed no signs of life and were pronounced dead at the scene. A 12-year-old boy, the only survivor from one of the vehicles, was found in critical condition. He was put on a ventilator at the scene of the accident and taken to a specialist hospital for further treatment.

“Another person also suffered serious injuries and required urgent medical attention,” Roberton said.

Local authorities and police were on site and investigations are ongoing.

Stanger crash

In another accident on the R74 between Stanger and the N2, five people were killed.

Samanthan Meyrick of the IPSS Medical Service said the collision between the two vehicles occurred on Saturday.

“There are currently three dead on site and several injured. This is an active crime scene.”

Meyrick said authorities were on site.

MK party accident

Previously, six members of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK Party) were killed in a taxi accident in KZN.

According to spokesman Nhlamulo Ndhlela, the taxi they were travelling in caught fire and they were trapped inside.

The accident occurred at 11am on Saturday as they were travelling to KwaDakw'udunuse to attend a celebration.

There were ten other injured people who were taken to hospital for medical treatment and further monitoring.

“While we can never fully measure the pain caused by such bereavement, we as party leaders wish to express our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the relatives and assure their families that we will stand by them in these difficult times,” Ndhlela said.
