Newcastle vs Tottenham Predictions

This game has produced plenty of goals in the past and it could be a neck and neck again when Newcastle host Tottenham at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon.

It has been a solid if unspectacular start to the season for both teams, with the Magpies beating Southampton 1-0 when they played with just ten men in the first half before playing a controversial 1-1 draw at Bournemouth after the Cherries had a late goal disallowed for handball.

Eddie Howe's side needed a penalty shootout to beat Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup during the week after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and will be hoping a penalty shootout win can give them a boost.

Newcastle didn't really get going in the final third, but if ever there was a game that could lead to an improvement in attack, there are few better ones than this one.

Seven of the last nine meetings between these sides have seen four or more goals. Five of those meetings have taken place on Tyneside and last season Tottenham won 4-1 at home before losing 4-0 away.

Goals are not uncommon at St. James' Park: in seven of the Magpies' last eleven Premier League home games, at least four goals have been scored, and the goals have also collided several times in Spurs' away games.

Four or more goals have been scored in six of Tottenham's last 11 away games in the top flight and it would be no surprise to see another attacking duel between two entertaining teams on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou's side started their season with a 1-1 draw against Leicester at the King Power Stadium before beating Everton 4-0 in north London.

Spurs had a total of 28 shots on goal in their first two games, with ten on target and five in the net, and they really should have scored more than one goal against the Foxes.

But despite keeping a clean sheet against the Toffees, Tottenham still look a little vulnerable at the back. They have conceded 17 goals and Newcastle could expose this weak defence.

Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, James Maddison and Heung-Min Son are all expected to feature in Tyneside, so the chances of scoring are high in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
