A 32-year-old mother and a tourist have died after being attacked in separate incidents while attending the Notting Hill Carnival weekend, police said.

Cher Maximen, who attended the carnival with her daughter last Sunday, died in hospital on Saturday morning, confirmed Commander Charmain Brenyah.

Ms Brenyah said: “The news of Cher's tragic death is devastating for her family, the wider community and everyone involved in running the Notting Hill Carnival.”

Police also confirmed that 41-year-old Swedish national Mussie Imnetu, who was found unconscious near Notting Hill on Monday evening, also succumbed to his injuries following a separate incident.

Shakiel Thibou, 20, of Masbro Road, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder of Ms Maximen.

He appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on September 25.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “It is heartbreaking that Cher Maximen and Mussie Imnetu have died after being attacked in separate incidents over the bank holiday weekend.

“My thoughts are with their families and friends at this truly terrible time.

“This violence is shocking, totally unacceptable and a betrayal of the values that the (Notting Hill) Carnival was founded to celebrate.”
