Students protest on NIT Trichy campus on Friday over sexual harassment

TRICHY: A 38-year-old contract worker was arrested by a woman police In Trichy on Friday for sexual harassment of a student at the Girls' dormitory from National Institute of Technology-Trichy (NIT-T) on Thursday. Hundreds of students protested at the institute and condemned the NIT Alleged insensitive comments by management towards the survivor and demands for better safety precautions.
According to police, a contract worker was hired on Thursday to repair the Wi-Fi internet connection in the girl's hostel. When the survivor was alone in her room, the accused, G Kathiresan of Mudhukulathur in Ramanathapuram, indecently exposed himself in front of the girl. The victim was disturbed by the act, fled from her room and approached the hostel administration. The students alleged that the hostel Overseer made insensitive remarks and criticized the survivor's organization. He protested against security gaps and condemned the Administration Due to a lack of sensitivity, the students started a sit-in in the early hours of Friday morning.
Meanwhile, the all-women Thiruverumbur police have registered a case under Section 332(C),75(1)(I) of the BNS and 4 of the Anti-Harassment of Women Act based on a complaint from the survivors. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody. As the students continued their protest, Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar visited them and assured that the management would be directed to fix security lapses. The SP said that NIT Trichy had been asked to ensure the presence of wardens and security personnel in the hostels whenever repair work was planned. Following this, the students withdrew their protest.
Officer M Pradeep Kumar said the NIT management had agreed to patch up the security lapses. “The principal or other officials should have accompanied the worker who was carrying out maintenance work in the girls' hostels,” the officer added. NIT-T director G Aghila told TOI that the principal, who was accused of criticising the survivor, had apologised to the girls students.
The students felt that the NIT administration should come up with a decisive action plan to prevent such incidents.
