London: A woman of Indian origin pleaded guilty on Friday to stabbing her 10-year-old daughter to death in the West Midlands. Jaskirat Kaur, 33, who calls herself Jasmine Kang, admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Wolverhampton Crown Court for the murder of her daughter Shay Kang nearly six months ago.

According to the BBC, Shay Kang was found with chest wounds in a house in Robin Close in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, on March 4. Her mother Jaskirat has denied the charge of murdering her daughter and her plea of manslaughter was accepted. She awaits sentencing on October 25.

Defence lawyer Katherine Goddard KC said there was “no dispute about the facts” of the case. The defendant, wearing a grey jumper, attended the brief hearing via video link and spoke only to confirm her name and to confirm she could hear Judge Michael Chambers KC. She appeared to be listening intently to the proceedings, leaning forward so she could hear what was being said.

“Your case is adjourned until sentencing, likely on October 25. Further reports are required, so it is in your interest to cooperate in the preparation of those reports,” Judge Chambers said in setting the date for the next hearing.

10-year-old Shay Kang was found dead in March

In March, the Black Country Coroner's Court was told that Shay's cause of death was stab wounds to the chest. Her mother was arrested after police discovered her daughter's body on March 4. In a memorial published by Brickhouse Primary School after her death, Shay was described as a “bright, happy, fun-loving child who was popular with everyone”.

“Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well-liked by everyone and we will all miss her very much. (The) school is the heart of the community and we have already begun working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news,” the school said in a statement.

Shay's body was officially handed over to the headteacher in July and her funeral, organised by the school, will take place on 5 September (Thursday). The school community raised £8,875 in a fundraiser for Shay's funeral, with the balance going towards a permanent tribute to Shay on the school grounds.

Speaking to the BBC, Shay's godmother Kayleigh Coclough said she had no children of her own and gave Shay all her love. “My mum and I were there at the birth. I was the one who cut her umbilical cord. She was just such a sweet child – so happy and cheerful. She was perfect. She was my everything. She still is,” said Coclough.
