On Saturday, a petition was filed in Chandigarh demanding that film actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut be filed against her for allegedly misrepresenting historical facts and hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs in the film “Emergency”.

The case was filed under section 302, 299, 196 Part 1, 197 Part 1 BNS before the District Judge. The next date for hearing of the case has been fixed for September 17, 2024.

Advocate Ravinder Singh, former president of District Bar Association Chandigarh and chairman of Lawyers for Humanity, who filed the case, said that in the film 'Emergency' directed by Kangana Ranaut, an attempt was made to defame Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest place of the Sikhs.

Singh added, “Attempts have been made to portray Jathedar Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as a terrorist, but this is completely baseless. There was no such complaint against him. A Dharam Yudh Morcha was set up to implement the Sri Anandpur Sahib Resolution and the government misinterpreted this and attacked Sri Harmandir Sahib, killing innocent people there and martyring the then Jathedar Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.”

Singh urged the ED to launch an inquiry into the film's funding. He further claimed that the film was made “without checking” the facts.

“The film was made without investigating these things and the funding for it should also be investigated by the ED to find out where the money comes from to make the films. In fact, her (Kangana Ranaut) films have been total flops in the past,” Singh said.

Singh informed that charges have been filed against Kangana Ranaut for attempting to hurt sentiments and “sowing tension between two communities”. “We have filed charges before the District Judge under Section 302, 299, 196 Part 1, 197 Part 1 BNS for attempting to incite religious sentiments of the people and sowing tension between the two communities by Kangana Ranaut. The next date for hearing has been fixed as September 17, 2024. It carries a maximum sentence of 2 years,” Singh said.
