Deal with coach Bruno Labbadia failed due to tax issue

Now it's official: Bruno Labbadia will not be the new coach of the Nigerian national team after all. The NFF association announced in a curious statement that the contract talks had failed due to the “strict” tax laws in Germany.

Previously, the Kickers Already on Friday it was reported that Labbadia had decided against the offer.

“We have been dealing with the tax issue for the past three days and I have made it clear to him that the NFF will under no circumstances agree to offset the tax portion demanded by the German tax authorities against his salary,” NFF President Ibrahim Gusau was quoted as saying in the statement. It is about a further “32 to 40 percent” of the salary.

These figures were apparently not mentioned in the “basic agreement”. On Tuesday, the association announced that the 58-year-old's signing had been completed. But now Augustine Eguavoen, technical director of the NFF, is to coach the national team for the time being.

Labbadia, who was sacked in April 2023 by VfB Stuttgart, who were then threatened with relegation, would have been the sixth German on the coaching bench of the “Super Eagles” after Karl-Heinz Marotzke, Gottlieb Göller, Manfred Höner, Berti Vogts and Gernot Rohr.
