Ice hockey fans in Vermont mourn Johnny Gaudreau

MIDDLEBURY, Vermont (WCAX) – Hockey fans in Vermont are mourning the loss of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, who died in a tragic accident along with his brother Thursday night. WCAX Sports Director Jack Fitzsimmons reports that the Gaudreau family's connection to the state is strong.

New Jersey State Police said the Gaudreau brothers died Thursday night when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while cycling in their home state.

Gaudreau, 31, was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011 after playing at Boston College, where Matthew also played.

Her father, Vermont native Guy Gaudreau, had a stellar career at North Country before excelling for Norwich, then in the second division.

The elder Gaudreau is also a star football player and a member of the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame.

Following the tragic news, Gaudreau's monument grows in front of the Blue Jackets arena in Columbus.
