The expanding “management cages” on Russia’s tanks are laughed at. Nevertheless, their popularity is growing in the war in Ukraine.

Moscow – Russia's tanks are causing problems for the drones in the Ukraine war. However, the so-called “management cages” that are supposed to protect the tanks have become a laughing stock over time. The cages have become bigger and bigger. They started out as improvised bars and have grown considerably. This is now even causing derision and mockery on a Russian news channel.

According to the Telegram channel, the latest version is Zvezdanews permanently installed on a T-80 tank, including a second, bulky protective box made of solid steel plates that are eight millimeters thick. A few grids at the front of the tank are intended to support air circulation. In the so-called “super turtle tank,” soldiers can, according to the military website Recognition by the army Some cages even have a bed on which soldiers can rest between military operations.

Tanks in the Ukraine war: Russian soldier proud of “super turtle”

A tank commander with the call sign Michej showed up, according to the Kyiv Post visibly proud of the super turtle. “Everything is held together tightly and works perfectly.” “No matter how much we drive, nothing comes loose or falls apart,” he said. But he also admitted that the armor protection limited the tank's visibility and mobility. The main weapon, which is actually mobile, was severely restricted.

Protection against losses: Turtle shell to enable breakthrough at the front line

Nevertheless, the Super Turtle is exactly what is needed for the targeted breakthrough through the Ukrainian front lines. That is how the tank commander assessed it. Other voices suspected that the current cage was a bit too much of a good thing – despite the protection against losses. Mines and artillery have already proven to be effective in previous models of the Turtle, and this is unlikely to have improved with this even more immobile tank.

The giant cage is a symbol of the importance of drones in the Ukraine war, but it is hardly the final development of the turtle. The disadvantages are likely to be too great for that. The fact that research and testing is still being carried out was shown at the “Army-2024” military exhibition in Moscow. Almost every tank there was equipped with cages and nets. According to media reports, Ukraine has also experimented with various tank cages designed to protect the tanks from the increased number of drones. (lisma)
