The Elk City Rodeo of Champions will go ahead this weekend despite the loss of over 40 horses by Beutler and Son Rodeo Company, the western Oklahoma city's most famous rancher.

“The whole town knows the Beutler family. They have been icons in this town for many years,” Elk City Police Chief Eddie Holland told The Oklahoman. “The town mourns with them over this tragic loss, but we are recovering well. We are recovering quickly.”

What happened at Beutler Ranch?

Last week, dozens of horses died at the Beutler and Son Rodeo Company ranch after being given monensin, a toxic livestock drug, in a horse feed mix.

The drug's primary function, according to Dr. Rod Hall, Oklahoma's state veterinarian, is to prevent the parasitic disease coccidioidomycosis in cattle, sheep and goats.

He said horses cannot tolerate the chemical, adding that it does not take much to kill them. It is unclear exactly how many horses died in the incident, but news outlets are reporting between 40 and 70.

State agriculture authorities examine Beutler horses and warn horse owners to check feed

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and the Kansas Department of Agriculture are investigating the matter because the feed comes from Kansas.

In a recent statement, Hall urged livestock and pet owners to check labels on feed products and contact a veterinarian if they have any questions about the safety of their food.
