Tim Burton reveals that Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis were not recurring stars in Beetlejuice 2 for THIS reason

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is already a hit before its theatrical release, having received tremendous applause at the Venice Film Festival where it premiered. Many of the cast members, including Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Catherina O'Hara, have returned to reprise their roles from the original 1988 film Beetlejuice. However, Tim Burton, the director of both films, did not bring back the roles of Adam Maitland and Barbara Maitland, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, in the sequel for good reason.

In a recent conversation, Tim spoke openly about why he chose to keep Alec and Geena out of the Beetlejuice sequel. Not only them, but Jeffery Jones also did not return to reprise his role as Charles Deetz. Baldwin and Davis played the deceased couple in the original film who were unable to leave their home and tormented the new family – the Deetz family who moved in their place.

Not only them, but Jeffery Jones also did not return to reprise his role as Charles Deetz. The Deetz family – Charles Deetz (Jones), Delia Jones (Catherine O'Hara) and their daughter Lydia Jones (Winona Ryder) were seen in the film Beetlejuice. Michael Keaton played Beetlejuice the Spirit in the 1988 horror comedy and reprises his role in the sequel. Tim Burton revealed in an interview with People why Alec and Geena were not in Beetlejuice 2.

He said: “I think for me it was that I didn't want to just tick any boxes. So even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first part, I focused on something else.” Tim continued: “A sequel like this was really about time. That was my starting point, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the core of it. I personally couldn't have done that in 1989 or so.”

Beetlejuice 2 focuses on Lydia's family and her relationship with her rebellious daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). When Delia and Lydia return to Winter River after a tragedy, the plot revolves around their story. The sequel will also see Justin Theroux play Lydia's fiancé Rory. Additionally, Monica Belluci will join the cast as Beetlejuice's ex-wife Delores, and William Dafoe will play ghost detective Wolf Jackson.

When Geena Davis was asked a few months ago whether or not she would return as Barbara Maitland, the actress told Entertainment Tonight that she would not. Davis said, “Oh, you expected me to? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don't age. I didn't. Our characters stayed the way they looked when they died forever, so it's been a while. It's been a minute.”

Well, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. But let us know your thoughts on Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin not returning for the sequel.
