Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed Thursday in what the team called an “unimaginable tragedy” when both menAccording to the New Jersey State Police, he was hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding his bicycle.

Johnny was 31 and Matthew was 29. Authorities say the driver who struck the two men faces two counts of manslaughter. Both were in town to attend their sister's wedding, scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.

Johnny Gaudreau played 763 regular season games in the NHL over 11 seasons, scoring 243 goals and 500 assists for the Calgary Flames and Blue Jackets. Gaudreau made the 2023 All-Star team after scoring 12 goals and 48 assists in 81 games last season.

He leaves behind his wife Meredith, their children Noa and Johnny, his parents Guy and Jane, and his sisters Kristen and Katie.

Johnny Gaudreau college career

Born on August 13, 1993 in Salem, New Jersey, Gaudreau played hockey at Gloucester Catholic High School before joining the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League in 2010.

He then attended Boston College and made an immediate impact, helping the Eagles win the 2012 national championship in his freshman season.

In his junior season, Gaudreau, nicknamed “Johnny Hockey,” scored 36 goals and had 44 assists (an NCAA-best), won the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nation's best hockey player, and was twice named Hockey East Player of the Year.

While in college, he also scored seven goals, helping the United States win a gold medal at the U20 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Johnny Gaudreau NHL Career

The Calgary Flames drafted Gaudreau in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, but he did not join the team until the 2013-14 season after his college career ended. He was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the 2014-15 NHL Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Gaudreau spent nine seasons with the Flames and was selected as an All-Star six times. His best season was 2021-22, when he scored 40 goals and set a career-high with 115 points.

After that season, Gaudreau hit the free agent market and signed a seven-year, $68.25 million contract with the Blue Jackets. In his first season with Columbus, he scored 21 goals and 53 assists.

In 2017, Gaudreau won the Lady Byng Trophy, which is awarded to the most “gentlemanly” player in the NHL.

Gaudreau helped organize a team-wide initiative to raise awareness of men's mental health in February. The Blue Jackets donated $1,000 per point through the “Laine Gives Back” program in Columbus after former Blue Jackets player Patrik Laine was attacked on social media for personal mental health issues.
