After a severe thunderstorm swept through Michigan earlier this week, drone footage captured a home in Berrien County split in half by a falling tree.

Footage captured by Nate's Dronegraphy in the southwest Michigan community of Union Pier shows the multi-story home split in two places by a large tree that fell during the violent storms. The two pieces of the tree pierced the roof and both floors of the home, which was fortunately unoccupied at the time.

Storms leave thousands without power

The storms that swept across Michigan on Tuesday night caused widespread power outages, flooding and school closures the following day. More than 330,000 Michigan homes and businesses were without power Wednesday morning because the storm was triggered by a wave of intense, record-breaking heat that hit the region this week, according to meteorologists.

Cleanup and repair work continued throughout August 28, and classes were canceled in numerous school districts.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than 92,000 power outages were still reported across the state, many in the Detroit metropolitan area and further north in Gladwin, Ogemaw and Lake counties.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY network, reported that utility repair costs were expected to exceed $50 million and that many customers would not get their power back until Friday.
