Insane Clown Posse hat helped FBI track down man in January 6 attack

Prosecutors on Thursday unsealed a criminal complaint accusing an Upper Peninsula man of breaking into the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack while wearing a distinctive hat associated with the rap duo Insane Clown Posse, which helped FBI agents track his movements.

Laurium resident Adam Mancuso, 45, broke into the Capitol, smoked, took photos and later donned a gas mask during the attack. He wore a black cap with the red “Hatchetman” logo of ICP's record label, Psychopathic Records, the unsealed criminal complaint said. Mancuso, a fan of the Detroit rap duo, runs “Adam's Stash,” an online store that sells jewelry and other Insane Clown Posse items with the “Hatchetman” logo, an FBI special agent wrote in the court filing.

The FBI is very familiar with the logo. A 2011 FBI report labeled the music group's fans, known as Juggalos, a gang. Insane Clown Posse and several followers challenged the designation, arguing that being called a gang violated constitutional rights to free speech and due process and that they had been targeted by police because they wore jewelry or tattoos featuring the group's symbol, a man running with an axe. The group and its fans lost an appeal in federal court in 2017.

Mancuso, a former Warren and Royal Oak resident who lives about 12 miles north of Houghton, according to land records, is at least the 31st person from Michigan — and among more than 1,400 nationwide — charged with crimes dating to Jan. 6, including rioting and breaking into the U.S. Capitol as Congress met to count electoral votes following Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 presidential election. That group includes former Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley and an amateur porn “personality” from Macomb County.

Mancuso was charged with four felony counts: willfully entering or remaining in any building not authorized for public access; willfully obstructing or disrupting the orderly conduct of government; disorderly conduct; and conducting, demonstrating, or staging protest marches in a Capitol building.

He was arrested on Wednesday and released on bail after a brief appearance in federal court in Marquette. Mancuso's lawyer, Michael Manning, had no immediate comment on Thursday.

The investigation into Mancuso began with a tip.

On January 12, 2021, six days after the attack, FBI agents received a tip that Mancuso had posted pictures on Facebook showing himself inside and outside the U.S. Capitol during the attack. In the photos, Mancuso is wearing the black hat with a red “Hatchetman” logo.

FBI agents searched Facebook and found more pictures of Mancuso wearing the hat.

Investigators next began surveillance of Mancuso at his home and spotted him outside a home in Royal Oak, concluding that he was the same person seen at the U.S. Capitol during the attack.

After examining surveillance camera footage from inside the U.S. Capitol, FBI agents alleged that Mancuso entered the building through the Senate wing door at 2:58 p.m. He was seen taking a selfie before heading toward the crypt in the U.S. Capitol, according to the complaint.

He was seen walking into the crypt holding a sign that read “America First, Never Give Up, Never Surrender” until he was confronted by a police officer.

According to the FBI, he let go of the sign and continued parading in the crypt.

Mancuso then entered the portico, where, according to the FBI, he was observed taking photos and videos of police officers.

At 3:20 p.m., according to the FBI, Mancuso is seen re-entering the Capitol through the East Rotunda doors and moving to the front of the mob. He stops, picks up a vaping device and his cellphone to record video before pulling out a gas mask.

He stood chest to chest with a police officer, who pushed Mancuso out of the police line, according to the complaint. Minutes later, Mancuso is seen leaving the building.
