Roanoke 2024 General Election Voter Guide: What You Need to Know

In the November 2024 election, Virginians will elect president, U.S. senator, U.S. House of Representatives, and in some areas, local offices. Cardinal News' voter guide answers common questions about how to vote and what's on the ballot.

Important dates

When does voting start?

20 September: The opportunity to vote early begins at your local registry office.

October 15: Deadline to register to vote if you are not already registered. (Voters can register after this date using a provisional ballot.). Are you registered to vote? Check it out here.

October 25: Deadline for applying for a postal vote.

2 November: Last day for early voting in person at the local registry office. Offices close at 5 p.m.

5 November: Day of personal voting at regular polling stations. Polling stations are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

How to vote

Can I vote with an out-of-state or expired driver's license?

Yes. If you arrive at your polling place without a valid ID, according to the Virginia Department of Elections, you can sign a statement verifying your identity and vote on a regular ballot. If your driver's license is expired, you can still use it to vote.

How do I vote by mail in Virginia?

You can request a mail-in ballot for the primary election until October 25.

Request a mail-in ballot on Virginia's election portal or mail a mail-in ballot request to your local election office. You can find the address of your election office on the Virginia Department of Elections website.

You can also request a mail-in ballot up to 11 days before October 25. After October 25, only emergency mail-in ballots are available until the day before the election. To qualify for an emergency mail-in ballot, you must have a serious conflict (such as a work dispute or a health issue of a close family member).

Can I vote early in person?

Yes. You can cast your early vote in person at your local registrar's office. You can find the location of the general registrar's office in your jurisdiction on the Virginia Department of Elections website, where you can also learn more about early voting.

When do the polling stations open?

Polling stations will be open on Tuesday, November 5, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

If you are in line until 7 p.m., you can vote.

Can I vote from prison in Virginia?

In many cases, yes. If you have not been convicted of a crime, or the governor has restored your right to vote after a felony conviction, you can vote – even from prison. This includes if you are incarcerated and awaiting your court date or are in jail for a misdemeanor conviction.

If you have been convicted of a serious crime, you can petition the governor to restore your right to vote.
