Former Eaton County correctional officer charged with child pornography

A former Eaton County Sheriff's Office correctional officer has been charged with allegedly possessing child pornography and sexually exploiting a minor, federal authorities said.

Ethan Eversman, 24, is accused of convincing a young girl in New York to send him explicit videos and images of herself online between 2021 and June 2024, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan said in a press release.

The Ionia man was also charged with storing child pornography videos on his phone and sending them to other people, the statement said.

Eversman exchanged the videos between himself, the girl and other people, including a person from Ohio, via the online messaging platform Kik, investigators wrote in an indictment filed on August 6.

If convicted, Eversman could face up to 30 years in prison, the press release said.

“Children should not have to endure the trauma of being victims of child exploitation,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in the press release. “My office is committed to working with our federal, state and local partners to protect our most vulnerable citizens from egregious sex crimes.”

Eversman's attorneys, Matthew George Borgula and Mikayla Hamilton, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

A document filed Wednesday shows that attorneys and prosecutors only recently made initial pretrial conference summary statements following Eversman's first pretrial hearing.
