A San Diego police officer lost his life in a devastating accident Monday night when a fleeing vehicle collided with his patrol car. Officer Austin Machitar, 30, who had been with the police force since 2019, tragically died in the crash. His partner that night, Officer Zach Martinez, 27, suffered serious injuries and is currently in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.

The driver of the speeding vehicle, whose identity was not released, was also killed in the collision. Officer Machitar was a dedicated member of the police force, serving in patrol duties, field training and recruiting new officers through videos and photo shoots.

Mayor Todd Gloria expressed his condolences and praised Machitar as a hero for his outstanding service to the city. Martinez, who was Machitar's mentor, has been with the department for 1 1/2 years.
