The Melbourne Storm suffered a serious injury shock during their round 26 clash with the Cowboys, with Ryan Papenhuyzen leaving the field early in the first half.

Papenhuyzen sent shockwaves through the Storm camp when he was taken off the field early in his side's clash with North Queensland.

However, Fox League's Brent Tate later confirmed that the full-back's injury was not as serious as initially feared.

“Ryan Papenhuyzen has a corkscrew occlusion on his lower leg but will not be back tonight,” he said.

Tate also confirmed that Storm's centre suffered a syndesmosis injury while attempting to score a try in the first half, which meant the end of the night for him.

KPP's return date announced after horrific leg wound

Kai Pearce-Paul from Newcastle could be back in the 27th round despite a 15cm cut that required internal and external stitches.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury on Saturday in Newcastle's season-saving win over the Rabbitohs when teammate Dylan Lucas took an own shot off his boot, leaving a gaping wound on his shin.

Pearce-Paul has been ruled out of the Knights' must-win match against the Titans on Sunday but could return for the final game against the Dolphins, with medical advisers weighing up whether he can fit a shin pad on his leg to protect the wound.

The English representative described the moment when he saw the cut that required emergency surgery.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know [at the time],” Pearce-Paul told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I didn't notice it until a few plays later when there was a stoppage. I looked down and thought it was a normal abrasion. Then I looked again and thought, 'Oh.' It was open and looked like a hot dog bun with a little bit of meat hanging out of it.

“I am next to [team-mate] Phoenix Crossland and I thought, “Phoen, is that my bone?” There was white in the middle. He swore when he saw it. I literally went straight to the doctor. I don't know if the bone or the flesh was a different color, but it was so deep – and it wasn't pretty.”

Pearce-Paul was admitted to hospital on Saturday evening and the wound was cleaned before surgery on Sunday morning.

Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien said Pearce-Paul's teammates were surprised by his calmness following the injury.

“I'm pretty good at dealing with these things,” he said. “I couldn't believe it more than anything else. I didn't really understand how it happened. It was more of a shock and I just thought, 'What the hell happened here?'

“[But] I was pretty interested when they examined it. I'm not one to be too squeamish. The guys said I looked pretty casual when they examined it. It's just a long piece coming out of the leg. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would.”
