Millions of dead fish clog Greek tourist port

Business owners, residents and a mayor have expressed concern after millions of dead and “decaying” fish clogged the Greek tourist port of Volos.

The footage captured by Maria Florou on Wednesday 28 August shows a stretch of river flowing into the port whose surface is completely clogged with dead fish.

Florou described the scene as “stagnant and decaying,” according to machine translation.

According to local reports, around 100 tons of dead fish had been removed by Thursday morning.

According to experts quoted by Greek media, the situation was a side effect of last year's severe floods. As the floodwaters receded, displaced freshwater fish were driven towards the sea, where they could not survive.

“It is time for businessmen and professionals to file mass lawsuits against those responsible for the massive financial damages they have suffered,” Volos Mayor Achilles Mpeos wrote on Facebook.

Local business leaders also expressed concern as their peak business season was affected. Image credit: Maria Florou via Storyful
