Family mourns man killed in Southwark subway attack

A man who died after an attack at Southwark tube station was described by his family as a “gentle, kind, quick-witted and funny” person who they looked forward to seeing in heaven.

Sam Winter, aged 28, was attacked at around 9.30pm BST on Thursday 22 August. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died on Saturday.

A man from the Southwark district has been charged in connection with the attack.

In a eulogy, his family said they were “devastated” by the loss of a “much loved son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew and friend.”

“We are devastated that his life has ended here,” the statement said.

“He was a qualified physiotherapist, AI engineer and volunteer with several charities. His family and friends will remember him as gentle and kind, quick-witted and witty, with deep faith and an endlessly generous spirit.

“Our family will never be the same and we will always miss him, but it is a great comfort to us to know that he is now home with his beloved Jesus and Father in Heaven. We look forward to seeing him there.”

A 23-year-old man is in custody and is accused of grievous bodily harm. The investigators want to ask the court to add the death of Mr. Winter to the charges.

Det Insp Paul Atwell, of the British Transport Police, said: “This was an awful and tragic incident which resulted in the death of a young man. Our specialist family liaison officers are supporting Sam's family. I ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.”
