Metrobus accident in Istanbul claims one life, 48 injuries and leads to operational disruptions

In the Istanbul district of Küçükçekmece, a moving metrobus collided with another metrobus, resulting in a serious accident with 48 injured, including four seriously injured, and one fatality. The metrobus, which was heading towards Beylikdüzü, lost control near Sefaköy, hit an oncoming metrobus, left the road and crashed into the guardrail.

Emergency services such as police, fire brigade and doctors were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. The firefighters managed to rescue two people trapped under the metrobus. The injured were immediately taken to nearby hospitals after receiving initial treatment on site.

The accident caused significant damage. The windows of both metrobuses shattered and their front and interior parts were damaged. Municipal teams are continuing to clean up the area and investigations are ongoing.

Metrobus services in both directions were suspended immediately after the accident, causing long lines of cars and many passengers to walk along the metrobus road to reach nearby stops. However, services resumed shortly after the metrobuses were removed from the scene with the help of tow trucks.

The moment of the collision has since been recorded by a nearby surveillance camera. The footage shows the metrobus heading towards Beylikdüzü brushing against the oncoming metrobus before losing control and eventually coming to a stop after hitting the guardrails in the right lane.

On Thursday, August 29, at 8:48 a.m., two metrobuses collided in the area of the Sefaköy Civil Registry Office in Küçükçekmece, Istanbul. The accident resulted in one death and 48 injuries, and two people are said to be in serious condition. The drivers of the two metrobuses and the inspector were arrested.

According to a statement from the Istanbul Governor's Office, numerous medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. An investigation into the accident has been launched.

The Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), Ekrem Imamoğlu, commented on the collision between two metro buses in Küçükçekmece: “The footage suggests that this was a driver error. Our team is quickly assessing the situation based on their positions.”

During his stay in Adıyaman for the Turkish Municipality Council meeting on August 28, Imamoğlu informed the press about the incident and said that they would closely monitor the developments related to the accident.

Imamoğlu expressed his condolences to the deceased and said: “We are following the traffic accident. Unfortunately, we have lost a citizen. I will visit the hospital as soon as I arrive to get examined. The images indicate that it may be a driver error. Our team is quickly reviewing the situation. Our condolences.”

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, who visited Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital, where some of the injured are being treated, confirmed that 48 people were affected by the accident. “Unfortunately, one person has died, two are in serious condition and 45 others are being treated for minor injuries,” he said. Governor Gül noted that the number of injured may vary as some people sought medical help on their own, which would require regular updates.

Eleven injured people arrived at the hospital, reported Gül. Four of them are being treated as inpatients and the rest as outpatients.

The Küçükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the accident. Legal and administrative procedures are currently underway. Governor Gül stressed that health and rescue teams provided immediate assistance. He assured that further details about the cause of the accident, which involved two metro buses and a white car, would be clarified during the investigation.

“The cause of the accident will be determined during the legal and administrative investigations,” Gül explained. “We are currently focusing on taking care of the needs of the deceased and injured citizens.”
