The Apple TV+ Vince Vaughn series Evil Monkey contains a soundtrack by Tom Petty Covers, and the music director of the show, Tony Von Pervieuxsays it was not difficult to convince artists to take part in the project.

In an interview with vultureVon Pervieux says the original plan was to include 10 Petty covers in the Florida-set series, but it turned into 21, and all the artists they contacted quickly came on board.

“The easiest thing was to say, 'Hey, we have this cool show and really cool experience to do a cover. This is the exact way I want this cover based on the scene,'” he says. “And they all said, 'Yeah, of course. We're huge Tom Petty fans. You don't have to explain it.'”

Van Pervieux says it was also important that the Petty estate was satisfied, noting that they kept the rocker's daughter. Adriatic in the loop while the songs continued playing.

“I was a little nervous going through it because you don't know what you can get out of covers and I didn't want to make a fool of the music,” he said, revealing that he sent Adria demos of the covers. “We got comments like, 'We really like this one, great work.'” Their only requirement was that the lyrics couldn't be changed.

The soundtrack, which will be released on October 4, includes covers by artists such as Pearl Jam'S Eddie Vedder, Weezer, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Sharon Van Etten and more.

“Tom Petty is just healthy food for everyone,” says Von Pervieux. “We brought together a family of artists that we respected and loved, and we respected and loved Tom Petty, too.”
