Most reliable car brands in 2024 for buying a used car

Owning a car is expensive and there are many aspects to consider when buying a car, such as fuel efficiency, reliability, repair and maintenance costs, and more.

What type of vehicle do I want? Do I want to buy a new or used vehicle?

While pretty much all of the decisions you make when buying a car come down to personal preference and budget, Consumer Reports hopes to help narrow down the choices a bit with the release of its first-ever used car brand rankings.

“Consumer Reports' first-ever brand ranking for used cars – focusing on the reliability of 5- to 10-year-old models – makes it clear that shoppers can reduce their risk of problems by choosing certain brands over others,” Consumer Reports said in a statement.

Consumer Reports Methodology

To compile its ranking, Consumer Reports focused on vehicle problems reported by its customers from model years 2014 to 2019. The survey included over 150,000 vehicles.

20 potential problem areas were examined, from annoyances like squeaky brakes and broken interior trim to serious problems like problems with the transmission, EV battery, EV charging and more.

To calculate a reliability score, Consumer Reports compares the number of problems a model has with the average number of problems for that model year.

“For newer cars, reliability differences tend to be small because the average problem rate for a newer model year like 2024 is so low,” Consumer Reports said in its statement. “But over time, problems can arise that lead to much larger differences between vehicles of the same model year.”

In Consumer Reports' statement, Steven Elek, senior automotive data analyst at Consumer Reports, says, “This longer-term perspective, which looks at reliability over a five- to 10-year period, provides a clear picture of what used car buyers can expect.”

For each brand included, data must be available for at least five years.

Most reliable used cars according to the ranking

According to Consumer Reports' rankings, Lexus is the top brand in used car reliability with a reliability score of 75.

Toyota came in second with a reliability score of 72.

“Brands like Lexus and Toyota have a long history of conservative redesigns, making incremental improvements across their entire product line rather than introducing many entirely new systems,” says Elek. “Our data shows time and time again over time that these brands' cars are reliable when they're new and that they remain reliable as they age.”

According to Consumer Reports, Lexus and Toyota also took the top two places in the new car rankings.

The other top five brands in terms of used car reliability, according to Consumer Reports, include Mazda with a score of 59, Acura with a score of 57, and Honda with a score of 55.

The five worst brands in terms of used car reliability, according to Consumer Reports' rankings, are Ram with a score of 35, Jeep with a score of 32, Tesla with a score of 30, Dodge with a score of 28, and Chrysler with a score of 27.
