The Tower season 3: release date, cast and plot of the ITV drama

ITV's The Tower doesn't mince words when it comes to murder. We have disappearances, gruesome deaths, drugs, stabbings – and even unsolved cases.

London Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins, the tough cop who takes on the capital's worst, handles it all. And this week she's back, with the third series of The Tower currently airing on ITV.

What can we expect in the coming season? Lots of drama, that's for sure.

What is “The Tower” about?

The series is based on Post Mortem, the first in a series of books by author Kate London about Sarah, who works for the fictional DSI department.

The first season focused on the suspicious deaths of a veteran London police officer and a young Libyan girl who fell to their deaths from the roof of a London skyscraper.

Shortly afterwards, Constable Lizzie Adama, one of the only witnesses, disappears. Sarah must search for her missing colleague and solve the mystery of what happened on the roof of the tower.

What happened at the end of the second season?

In the second season, Sarah investigates the case of missing student Tania Mills, which has remained unsolved for 26 years.

After days of searching, Tania's body is finally found in Morville Park, in the memorial garden that her music teacher Adrian Stephenson and Tania's classmates had planted in honor of her. It is then revealed that Tania's best friend Katherine (Rosalie Craig) has her own story about Stephenson: he “persuaded” her to play the violin naked during her private music lessons.

Although Stephenson is arrested, the plot thickens and Sarah discovers that Stephenson's ex-wife Abigail Levy (Rebecca Calder) was also underage when they married. Abigail confesses that she killed Tania by pushing her down the stairs in a fit of rage when she discovered she was being abused.

Abigail then drank herself unconscious and when she woke up, the body was gone. Stephenson said he disposed of it and “saved” it. However, the twist at the end of the episode tells a different story: Tania was actually strangled by Stephenson.

“I thought there were enough twists already, and then there was the final twist where I thought, 'Oh, this is brilliant and so believable,'” Whelan said of the final act.

What is planned for season three?

Like seasons one and two, season three is based on a book by Kate London: in this case “The Tower 3: Gallowstree Lane”.

And there's plenty of drama on the horizon, too. A young teenager has been stabbed to death, and during her investigation, Sarah meets Lizzie (Tahirah Sharif), who is now a mother and detective.

At the same time, she must deal with “DI Kieran Shaw, who leads Operation Perseus, an undercover police task force aimed at bringing down south London drug lord Shakiel Oliver.”

The synopsis states: “Kieran teams up with DC Steve Bradshaw, who is working undercover to infiltrate Shakiel's empire. At the centre of the conflict between Sarah and Kieran is 15-year-old Ryan Kennedy, who witnessed the fatal stabbing but is also an important part of Shakiel's inner circle.

“As Perseus builds to its shocking climax, Ryan will play a surprising role.” Juicy.

Sarah, the show's heroine and moral guide, is tasked with solving some of London's most gruesome cases. Whelan has hinted that her character will face tough times in season three. “Her moral compass is very north-south,” she said.

“She's steadfast in her police work, which is strictly by the book, but I think this season challenges that a little bit. It hits her personally… usually she can make a difference because she follows the book, and things work out because you follow the rules.”

“And this time it's so messy. This season she's held up a mirror to her and for the first time Sarah can't fix it.”

Whelan is perhaps best known for her role as Yara Greyjoy in the television series Game of Thrones. The Leeds-born actress has worked as a comedian and appeared in shows such as Gentleman Jack and Upstart Crow.

Lizzie is a young police officer who plays a crucial role in the events of the first season. Although she has lost contact with Sarah, she is now a detective and a young mother.

Sharif has appeared in shows such as “Waterloo Road,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and the Netflix Christmas film “A Christmas Prince.”

DC Steve Bradshaw, played by Jimmy Akingbola

Jimmy Akingbola is a Nigerian-British actor

Steve is Sarah's former partner in the police force, who also works in the homicide squad. He is working undercover to bring drug dealer Shakiel Oliver to justice.

Akingbola is a Nigerian-British actor who broke through playing the role of PC Neil Parker in the television series Holby Blue and then as Antoine Malick in Holby City. He is also a prolific stage actor, playing Othello in a 2008 production at the Lyric Theatre and Winston in a 2013 production of The Island.

DI Kieran Shaw, played by Emmett J Scanlan

Kieran is a police officer who clashes with Sarah over his handling of Operation Perseus.

Scanlan has appeared in Peaky Blinders, Gangs of London, The Fall and Guardians of the Galaxy – as well as the British remake of Call My Agent!: Ten Percent.

Ryan Kennedy, played by Lamar Waves

Ryan Kennedy is a teenager from London who is heavily involved in Shakiel Oliver's drug gang.

Ryan is a London teenager who is closely involved with Shakiel Oliver's drug gang. He is the only witness to a fatal stabbing – but Sarah's attempts to find out the truth soon come up against Kieran's plan to bring Shakiel down.

Waves, who plays him, is a Croydon-born rapper and actor who will appear in Letitia Wright's directorial debut, Highway to the Moon.

The show airs on ITV1 at 9pm on Monday 2nd September – set your alarm.

The four-part drama will be shown on consecutive evenings in the same time slot, with the finale taking place on Thursday, September 5th.
