Officials are warning the public to be cautious after a jogger was suspected of being bitten by a coyote in Marblehead on Tuesday.

According to an article by Wicked Local media partner WCVB Channel 5, Susan McCarthy of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife explained, “First it pinched her leg from behind, then it came forward, pinched her leg, retreated, and then came back again. The way she described it, like it came back, approached her, and moved purposefully, it didn't seem to be just curious.”

So what can Massachusetts residents do to avoid encounters with coyotes?

Here's what you should know:

What species of coyote is most common in Massachusetts?

According to Mass.gov, the so-called Eastern Coyote is found throughout Massachusetts, with the exception of the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.

“This medium-sized predator can thrive in suburban, urban and rural areas,” according to Mass.gov. The animal “is similar in body size and shape to a medium-sized dog, but has longer, denser fur and pointed, erect ears. The tail is long, has a black tip and is bushy. The typical coat color is a grayish gray, but can vary from creamy blond to red or almost pure black. The typical weight of females is between 33 and 40 pounds, while males usually weigh 34 to 47 pounds. A very large male can weigh around 60 pounds, but such an animal is exceptional.”

How can coyotes be kept away from homes?

According to the Humane Society of the United States, you can take the following steps to keep these coyotes away from your residence:

  • Avoid feeding pets outside. Remove any outdoor food bowls once your pet has finished eating.
  • Do not feed coyotes when you see them. This will habituate them to humans and could ultimately “lead to their death.”
  • Also, remove your pets' water bowls from outside. Water can be tempting to coyotes when it's hot.
  • Use leak-proof birdhouses and flavorful bird food.
  • Store garbage in high-quality containers with tight-fitting lids.
  • Install a fence around your house.

How can coyotes be scared away?

The animal welfare group explained that there are some things you can do to scare away coyotes, even though they generally do not show much fear.

These measures include:

  • Yelling and waving your arms as you approach a coyote.
  • Use noise makers such as your voice, whistles, air horns, bells, shaker cans full of marbles or pennies, or pots banging together.
  • Throw projectiles such as sticks, small stones, cans, tennis balls or rubber balls.
  • Use hoses, water guns with vinegar water, spray bottles with vinegar water, pepper spray or bear repellent.

The Humane Society states that coyotes “may not run away at first, but as you get closer to them and/or increase the intensity of your intimidation attempts, they will run away. If the coyote runs away a short distance and then stops and looks at you, continue the intimidation until it leaves the area completely.”

What diseases do coyotes transmit?

According to the animal protection association, rabies is the most common disease in coyotes.

“Any warm-blooded mammal can get rabies,” the animal welfare organization's website states. “In the past, rabid coyotes have been found in South Texas, but in recent years they have been rare.”

When is hunting season for coyotes?

According to Mass.gov, the coyote hunting season runs from October 14 to March 8, 2024 and from October 19, 2024 to March 8, 2025.
