Strongest typhoon of all time hits Nagasaki region in Japan with three deaths

Typhoon Shanshan hit southwest Japan on Thursday with heavy rains and strong winds, bringing air traffic to a standstill and cutting off power to more than a quarter of a million households.

At least three people were killed. Major automakers such as Toyota 7203.T and Nissan 7201.T suspended production at some or all of their domestic factories due to the storm, while chipmaker Renesas 6723.T decided to temporarily halt production at four factories.

The typhoon, with gusts of up to 50 meters per second (180 km/h), was located near the city of Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture at 07:45 GMT and was moving north at about 15 km/h, according to the weather agency. The storm had previously made landfall near the city of Satsumasendai on the southwestern island of Kyushu.

Authorities warned that the storm could be one of the strongest ever to hit the region, and local governments have issued evacuation orders for millions of residents in several prefectures.

Three people died in the typhoon, one was missing, two were seriously injured and five suffered minor injuries, said Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi.
