Accident at intersection affected by power failure in the Como district claims fatalities

A man has died after the van he was riding in overturned after colliding with an SUV early Wednesday morning at a St. Paul intersection where traffic lights are currently out due to a power outage. Police say the van he was riding in overturned.

According to police, officers were called to the intersection of Lexington Parkway and Como Avenue shortly after 5:15 a.m. because of a two-vehicle accident.

The police found a Dodge Journey and a Ford Transit that had overturned.

The passenger in the van, who authorities said was a man in his 90s, was injured inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was then taken to Regions Hospital, where he died later that morning. His name was not released at the time of publication.

Police added that the driver of the van suffered minor injuries.

The van is registered to MIK Transportation in Eagan, which provides transportation to doctor's appointments, church services and adult day care.

According to St. Paul police, their investigation revealed that the van was traveling east on Como Avenue when it was struck by the northbound Journey on Lexington.

According to police, the power outage at bus stops and streetlights at and near the intersection was caused by the storm on Tuesday morning.
